Salty Sweet Toffee Crunch Bars
1 pack of saltines
1 cup earth balance (or butter, if you swing that way)
1 cup packed brown sugar
2 1/2 cups chocolate chips
1 cup chopped almonds (or any kind of nut to your liking)
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350F and spray cookie sheet with PAM baking spray. Line the sheet pan with the crackers close together. In a medium sauce pan melt the earth balance and brown sugar over medium-high heat. Stir often. Heat the mixture for about 5 minutes until it browns.Pour the buttery mixture over the crackers until they are completely covered. Bake for 15 minutes.
Remove from oven and immediately sprinkle chocolate chips over the saltines. Once the chocolate begins to melt, spread the chocolate evenly with an offset spatula and top with the nuts. Allow to completely cool. Break it apart into manageable pieces and ENJOY!!
looks awesome! what size cookie sheet did you use?
ReplyDeletehalf sheet pan 9x13.. enjoy!! Let me know what you think :D
ReplyDeletethanks! also, does the earth balance and brown sugar mixture need to reach a certain temp or is the 5 min enough? i heard one needs to watch this as the toffee may not set correctly. What's your advice?
ReplyDeleteJust until it reaches a simmer and browns a bit in color ( that gives the butter or earth balance its rich nutty flavor!)... the toffee happens while its baking through in the oven... Thats the beauty of this recipe its fool proof and DELISH!! :D
ReplyDeleteWhat's the point of the saltines? And don't they make it taste weird or get soggy or something? Sorry if that seems rude, it's just such a strange addition to a toffee recipe!
ReplyDeletehumm where do i begin... it makes them crunchy, salty sweet and absolutely fantastic. Why so cynical? Why don't you make them first?
ReplyDeleteI am just cynical by nature, but I am making this recipe for Christmas, don't worry!
